Delhi Dynamos F.C. brought an end to their losing run after securing a thrilling 2-2 draw against Chennaiyin F.C. at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai on Sunday. The win helps Lions record their first point of the season since their opening day win against F.C Pune City.
Head Coach Miguel Angel Portugal opted to start with David Nghaite and Lallianzuala Chhangte in a two-man strike force while new signing Xabi Irueta made his debut as he was picked ahead of Arnab Das Sharma.
The new faces certainly made an impact as the Lions took the lead in the 24th minute when a Nandhakumar cross found Ngaihte unmarked in front of the goal and he calmly slotted his header past Karanjit Singh. This was only the second time that Dynamos had scored first in an ISL game this season.
The Lions continued their domination and were the better of the two sides in the first half keeping more of the possession and constantly testing the Chennaiyin custodian.
But 5 minutes before half time, the hosts got their equaliser when forward Jeje headed in from a free-kick. The Mizo sniper celebrating his 27th birthday beat Irueta in the far post.
Chennai continued from where they left off at the start of the second half and were instantly rewarded when Jeje skipped past Pratik Chowdhary to curl the ball into the top corner to hand Chennaiyin the lead.
A determined Delhi though did not give up and continued to press forward. Coach Portugal introduced Kalu Uche, Rowilson Rodrigues and Guyon Fernandes for the final 30 minutes and the physical presence of the towering forwards certainly made things difficult for the Chennai defense.
Lions’ continued pressure was finally rewarded in the final minute of the game when Kalu leaped ahead of his marker to head the ball towards Guyon who tapped in from close range to level the scores and earn Delhi a much needed point.
